Youth Volunteer Initiative

United Way of York County established the Youth Volunteer Initiatives program (YVI) in 2001 to work with schools and agencies to engage young people in volunteerism. Its mission is to develop and aggressively promote a comprehensive youth volunteer program empowering agencies, schools, and other volunteer organizations to mobilize youth in addressing York County's needs. The YVI works closely with the Volunteer Center of the United Way of York County to help develop and facilitate processes for reaching out to and educating youth about the importance of volunteerism and civic engagement.

The YVI program teaches middle and high school students about the importance of volunteering and how to find opportunities available to them. The YVI Coordinator, a SecureCorps member, conducts presentations at middle and high schools throughout York County. Presentations can be made to classrooms or larger groups of students. The Coordinator also plans service projects for National Family Volunteer Day (November), Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service (January) and Global Youth Service Day (April). Youth, families, and individuals of all ages are invited to participate in these days of service.
