"The Labor movement and the United Way movement have a lot in common-
we have a rich history and heritage of caring about human needs, justice,
fairness and opportunity. We succeed together when we put our community first.”

Brian A. Gallagher, President and Chief Executive Officer, United Way of America

The United Way of York County is proud of the long-standing partnership we enjoy with organized labor. Since 1974, we have worked together with Labor Community Services of the York-Adams Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, to improve people’s lives and put our community first. Labor representatives serve in key roles within United Way by serving on the Board of Directors, Campaign Cabinet and other volunteer capacities.

The AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison/Director of Labor Participation supports the programmatic workplan of the Labor Council. Below is a list of activities and community services: for detailed information, click on a topic or contact Alan Vandersloot, AFL-CIO Community Services Liaison/Director of Labor Participation.

Assistance for Laid Off or Dislocated Workers
The United Way is represented on the York County “Rapid Response” team coordinated through the PA Department of Labor & Industry. Employees affected by mass lay-offs and plant closings are provided with useful information regarding unemployment compensation, job search or training assistance. Employees also receive information about other local human service resources available during their transition to new employment.

Letter Carriers’ Food Drive
The drive is conducted annually on the second Saturday in May. Letter Carriers collect non-perishable food items that are then distributed to local food pantries serving residents of York County. This year, the food drive collected approximately 90,000 pounds of food on May 9, 2009.

York County Youth Yellow Pages
This unique booklet was developed to provide assistance to youth facing a variety of problems and issues. It is a resource guide that helps young people find out where to go for information, help and support for everyday situations. Click here to access the York County Youth Yellow Pages website.

The UCAN training course will also enhance attendees’ leadership skills.
